Women and Politics

I was inspired to write this post because of the recent news that Lauren Boebert a recently elected politician to the House of Representatives from Colorado, USA has filed for divorce. She is relatively young (at least younger than me), and has four children. That she is likely also controlled opposition is irrelevant for the purposes of this post but I can’t resist mentioning it. Though for the purposes of this post I will assume that Boebert and the two other women I am to mention are or were genuinely committed to political change in the United States and not just looking be famous and/or enrich themselves.

Lauren Boebert is easy on the eyes (at least compared to most politicians), and ran on a conservative platform as well as being a close supporter of Donald Trump. I didn’t follow her election but I noticed her mentioned from time to time in the media. She has appeared in multiple photographs strapped with a firearm and her platform supported various causes and positions I am certainly sympathetic to.

I have detailed elsewhere here that I don’t take mainstream politics seriously and see little to be gained from getting involved though I stand by the hopes I had that Donald Trump may have brought genuine change. Many people with similar sympathies still have at least some faith in the system and believe genuine change can be exercised through it. These same people seem to get excited by every new candidate that appears on the scene — only to later disappoint. They are particularly enthusiastic when a pretty woman or some minority echoes their political sentiments too.

Lauren Boebert is just such a politician. She’s a Christian, supports gun rights and protecting the family. Only now she’s made as much a mockery of the first and third by filing for divorce as she did to the second with publicity stunts. There is even a tweet of hers that has unsurprisingly resurfaced where she states,

Radical Liberals want to destroy the American nuclear family so people can depend on the government.

There is nothing more important than the family unit & every policy put forth in this country should keep this in mind.

Actions, as they say, speak louder than words this mother of four is now initiating divorce proceedings and apparently against the wishes of her husband. Now, I will freely admit here that I do not know the circumstances but the circumstances aren’t really relevant. I am more concerned with the scandal this causes among her supporters. And I’d be willing to bet a very expensive steak dinner than this divorce would not have happened had she never entered into the public eye. She was married in 2007 which seems like a lifetime ago so it is not like the marriage wasn’t working for a long time before she entered politics.

All that has happened since her being elected to office then is to destroy her credibility and worse: destroy the very family she had the most power and responsibility to protect. In reality, the family can only be protected by the husband and wife that form it in becoming one flesh. They can do nothing for other families short of providing a good witness to their friends and neighbours. So even if she were to go on to pass laws protecting the families, the fact that she’s failed her own makes for a Pyrrhic victory at best.

A similar story happened back in 2014 in the last years of Obama’s second term during the Tea Party movement. The Tea Party was a genuine grassroots political movement that was soon converged by the usual suspects and quickly rendered politically harmless. As far as I know, all the successful political candidates from this movement either never got re-elected or soon mutated into the same swamp creatures they ran to replace. I don’t know which, but I do know things have gotten a lot worse in the last decade.

This next woman (perhaps mercifully), didn’t last long enough to become a politician. Holly Fisher is another young mother who posed for pictures with firearms in public. There were a few different photographs but the most famous had her standing with a rifle and a Bible in front of an American flag.

That this image was claimed to “make liberal heads explode” shows how little many conservatives seem to understand their political enemies. In reality, the above image just confirmed their prejudices. They didn’t care and what it led to caused far more damage and scandal to conservatives than it did to any liberal whose collective heads remained very much unexploded. I am including her because by simply posing for some silly photographs while immodestly dressed, she was invited into conservative political circles and not long after; committed adultery.

This affair supposedly happened the night of the Faith & Freedom conference and was exposed by Charles C. Johnson. She has thankfully been out of the news (as far as I know), since and I hope she stays out. What can give further hope is that husband and wife seem to have also remained together despite this scandal. The damage was still done though and done in a very public and horrible way. Once again, her political activism only damaged the very thing she should have been working hardest to protect. She was more innocent than Boebert at least, in that her 15 minutes of infamy was unexpected and she was no doubt taken advantage of by the disgusting creatures that inhabit Washington D.C. If any positive can be drawn it is that it revealed most of these conservative organisations have morals little better than their opponents. Once again, it is important to emphasise that this all came from pictures posted on social media and not from any genuine talent or previous achievements.

Lastly, going back another six years to the 2008 Presidential Election where Sarah Palin became a household name. She was then the Governor of Alaska and became known internationally when chosen as the running mate for John McCain. She alone energised the campaign for McCain who would have been way worse than Obama even without the benefit of hindsight. They lost but she remained popular and was involved in the aforementioned Tea Party movement. She is still involved in much of the same grift today.

Sarah Palin is a mother of five children and was married to her husband for over thirty years. I say “was” because she is now divorced. Again, the circumstances aren’t really relevant here. What is relevant for all these women is they are all wives and mothers and all ended up causing ruin for their family as a result of their political pursuits. What is often ignored is the scandal this causes among people who share the beliefs they apparently stand for. Their roles as wives and mothers should have taken precedence over politics. If they were truly committed to their principles, they would have bowed out the instant their marriages fell into trouble as at least Holly Fisher did.

C.S. Lewis points out how important is the role of a mother over all other occupations, writing:

“I think I can understand that feeling about a housewife’s work being like that of Sisyphus (who was the stone rolling gentleman). But it is surely in reality the most important work in the world. What do ships, railways, miners, cars, government etc. exist for except that people may be fed, warmed, and safe in their own homes? As Dr. Johnson said, “To be happy at home is the end of all human endeavour”.

Thanks to this site for having the actual source of the quote too.

Now men do commit adultery and do terrible thing and most politicians are men. Pointing this out is to miss the point. Men must work to support a family and support a woman to nurse and care for young children. This doesn’t mean the father isn’t involved at home just that the roles aren’t so interchangeable as society tries to have us believe. This also doesn’t even mean women can never be involved in political action. The late Phyllis Schlafly was certainly an exception to these three examples but her family still came first. She had six children and her husband didn’t leave her until his death parted them and we can hope both are now united again with our Lord in Heaven.

I could find more examples if necessary but the main point for all is that these three women would have done much better to stay at home and focus on their family instead of trying to make any political changes in their rapidly decaying country. Lauren Boebert is but the latest sad example.

UPDATE (05/06/23): Marjorie Taylor Greene is another recent example who was divorced in 2022.
